A dozen apps now sell the same shape of product. Most of them are a good microphone client in front of somebody else's server. Here is what separates them, and where that model stops making sense.

Aqua Voice was listing $10 a month, or $8 billed annually, with a Max tier at $30, in September 2026. Most of the field sits between $10 and $15. Over three years that is $360 to $540 for typing. Local apps in the same category run $25 to $99 once.
They need a connection and an account
The transcription happens on a server, so no connection means no dictation, and every one of them has a sign-up. If you work on planes, in secure buildings, or with material you cannot send out, the category rules itself out regardless of quality.
What the cloud genuinely buys you
Speed that does not depend on your hardware, phone and Windows apps, teams and admin, and heavier rewriting than a small local model can do. Those are real advantages and worth paying for if you use them.

Common questions
Are cloud dictation apps more accurate?
Not meaningfully, for dictation. Most run Whisper-class models, and that model runs fine on an Apple Silicon Mac. The cloud advantage shows up in rewriting, summarising and commands, where model size matters more.
Why are they all around $12 a month?
Because every word you speak costs them compute. A local app pays that cost once, on your machine, which is why one-time pricing exists in that half of the category and not in this one.
