Scalability.

A system's ability to handle growth in users, data, or traffic without falling over or slowing down.

Scalability is how gracefully your product copes as demand grows. A scalable system handles ten times the users with more resources and little redesign; an unscalable one needs a painful rewrite the moment it gets popular.

It's a balance. Over-engineering for millions of users you don't have yet wastes time and money. Ignoring scale entirely means your launch-day success becomes your launch-day outage. The craft is building a foundation that scales when needed without gold-plating it on day one.

Good architecture, sensible database design, and infrastructure that can grow are what make scaling a configuration change rather than a crisis. It's far cheaper to design for it early than to retrofit it under pressure.
